Having successfully wrapped up the Tenka’ichi Budōkai, and with the series’ popularity now soaring, Akira Toriyama seems to have discovered the winning formula. Wanting something similar to the Tenka’ichi Budōkai, but not in a tournament style, Toriyama turns to another of his hobbies for inspiration — video games. As he notes in his Daizenshuu 2 interview, he had recently been playing Spartan X on the Nintendo Famicom, a game based on the Jackie Chan film Wheels on Meals. The game was known for its “beat ’em up” style, with opponents successively battling the protagonist one after another. Toriyama decides to follow this pattern and introduces the first true enemy into the series: the Red Ribbon Army, a nefarious organization in search of the Dragon Balls. Using the Red Ribbon Army as an over-arching villain also allows him the freedom to use a variety of environments with unique villains to pit Goku against, although he admits he is still making the story up as he goes along.
Among other sources of inspiration, Toriyama brings in architecture seen at the “Little World” Museum of Man in nearby Inuyama for the Karin Sanctuary, and even his pet cat Koge (an all-black stray he had initially hid from his assistant Matsuyama) as the model for both Karin himself and Dr. Brief’s ever-present pet. Toriyama is even able to bring back the characters of his previous hit, Dr. Slump, for a special three-chapter crossover as the action makes a stopover in Penguin Village. The first chapter of the crossover, in issue 1986 #31, is entirely in full color, which Toriyama claims to have “nearly killed [himself]” doing.
This year also marks the beginning of the Dragon Ball animated TV series, making its debut on 26 February 1986, shortly after the release of issue 1986 #13. Although he helps select the main cast, Toriyama is largely hands-off with the story, only intervening when he starts to feel that the show is taking on an air too similar to Dr. Slump. Nevertheless, his choice of Masako Nozawa as Son Goku in particular helps shape even the manga, as Goku’s speech patterns grow more distinct, and his character more defined. Toriyama would continue to take “hints” from the TV series in the shaping of his art and story for the duration of the series.
As of the 5th issue of the year, which is actually the last issue published in 1985, Weekly Shōnen Jump celebrates 4.35 million copies in circulation. By the end of 1986, the number of copies in circulation has increased to 4.5 million. Throughout the year Dragon Ball is the featured illustration on five issues, although the cover illustration from issue #7 has unfortunately never been reprinted in either Daizenshuu 1 or the Chōgashū. The series is also featured on a foldout poster in issues #12 and #23, is the featured poster in Weekly Jump’s 1986 “Spring Special” magazine, and is the exclusive series featured in Weekly Jump’s traditional yearly calendar for 1986. In addition, Dragon Ball sticker packs are included as part of the opening page supplements in both issues #21 and #22. Over the course of the year Shueisha also released three new collected tankōbon volumes, with two recycling artwork from previous chapter title pages and only a single one featuring new cover art from Toriyama.
Away from the series, Toriyama is commissioned early on in the year to create character designs and artwork for the first Dragon Quest video game after being approached by his editor, Kazuhiko Torishima, and the game’s writer, Yūji Horii. The two mutual acquaintances are familiar with each other through their respective work with Weekly Shōnen Jump, as Horii is also working under Torishima at the time writing video game columns for Weekly Shōnen Jump. As the end of the year approaches, and after countless hours of playing Dragon Quest himself, Toriyama begins working on the video game’s sequel, Dragon Quest II.
Between his work on Dragon Ball and Dragon Quest, Toriyama also manages to find some time at the end of the year to draw Mr. Ho, his first one-shot manga since 1983’s The Adventure of Tongpoo. Appearing alongside Dragon Ball Chapter 99 in issue 1986 #49, it features an ex-soldier suspiciously similar to Yamcha, who becomes a one-man army in order to defend a new acquaintance from a vicious gang and win over the boy’s standoffish older sister. While Toriyama complains about how busy an extra chapter on top of everything else makes him, and how he has no time to go out to the movies or take time off, things are about to get even crazier, because Dragon Ball’s popularity knows no limits and Toriyama’s wife is pregnant with their first child. If anything, this is the calm before the storm…
